A Betting Woman

Jenni. L. Walsh

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This book had me bewitched from the start! Once Upon A Book Club really knows how to pick out the best books! Eleanor Dumont, famously known as Madame Moustache, was known for her vingt-et-un which is the modern day blackjack. The story is set in the 1820’s when the gold rush period was just beginning and people were jumping at the opportunity to go to the west and become wealthy. Having been brought up in an affluent family, Eleanor, then known as Simon Jules is a 20 year old girl immured to the social conventions of the time. With no one to guide her through these tumultuous times, she takes matter into her own hands and travels west to try her luck. Throughout her journey, the story of this strong female protagonist takes you on a roller coaster ride and you’re able to visualize the hardships of Madame Moustache. Throughout her valorous journey, we view her perseverance to leave a mark on the world and by the end of the book you’re completely invested in her story. A truly mesmerizing book, this book is sure to leave a mark on your mind.
